Even now, you can find the descendants still working in the district. Most settled on 47th Street and thus, the Diamond District was born. It really blossomed in the 40s when European Orthodox Jews fled to New York during World War II. Eventually, it got too expensive and the jewelers found a new home on 47th Street.
